His first five shots at 25 yards. The load was 90 gr of Goex 2F, .58 cal bore
button and a .570 Speer ball with a .015 patch. Powder charge didn't seem to
matter much, we tried 110 and 120 grain charges and she still wanted to shoot
through the same hole. After moving to 50 yards and filing the front sight and
a slight drift, shes pretty much set at that range. Next session we get serious
about a final load.
I'm happy with the way it came out. It won't compare with a Pro's work but
it's built rugged and shoots straight and Uncles extremly happy with it. And I
turned another hunter on to using a Flinter! Can't beat that.
Update!
This will have to be continued. He hunted June 5th to June 10th in almost all
rain. And although he did keep the rifle dry, he did not see a bear to shoot this
year. Hopefully he'll try it out on a Whitetail this fall and try for bear again
next spring.
Update! June 12, 2008
Took a couple of years but I told him enough is enough and never mind about
waiting for a big one. He had this young one come in and give him a good shot
so he tagged it. The shot was at 14 yards and the load of a .570 ball on top of
100 gr's of 3F went through both shoulders and lungs. The bear dropped right
there and had a dressed weight of 125 lbs. He also got the shot on video.
